Duas and Hadiths on Curiosity

Seeking Knowledge and Avoiding Harm

Curiosity is a natural part of human nature, a powerful force that can lead to great discovery or dangerous pitfalls. In Islam, we are encouraged to pursue knowledge that is beneficial to us and to others, while being cautious of curiosity that leads to prying into matters that are not our concern or that may harm our faith. These duas and hadiths guide us to channel our curiosity in a way that is pleasing to Allah.

Duas for Guidance and Beneficial Knowledge

Dua for Beneficial Knowledge

اَللّٰهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ عِلْمًا نَافِعًا، وَرِزْقًا طَيِّبًا، وَعَمَلًا مُتَقَبَّلًا

Allahumma inni as'aluka 'ilman nafi'an, wa rizqan tayyiban, wa 'amalan mutaqabbalan.

"O Allah, I ask You for beneficial knowledge, good provision and acceptable deeds."

(Ibn Majah)

Dua for Protection from Unbeneficial Knowledge

اَللّٰهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ عِلْمٍ لَا يَنْفَعُ، وَمِنْ قَلْبٍ لَا يَخْشَعُ، وَمِنْ نَفْسٍ لَا تَشْبَعُ، وَمِنْ دَعْوَةٍ لَا يُسْتَجَابُ لَهَا

Allahumma inni a’udhu bika min ‘ilmin la yanfa’u, wa min qalbin la yakhsha’u, wa min nafsin la tashba’u, wa min da’watin la yustajabu laha.

"O Allah, I seek refuge in You from knowledge which does not benefit, from a heart that does not fear You, from a soul that is not satisfied, and from a supplication that is not answered."

(Sahih Muslim)

Hadith on the Importance of Knowledge

طَلَبُ الْعِلْمِ فَرِيضَةٌ عَلَى كُلِّ مُسْلِمٍ

Talabul-’ilmi faridatun ‘ala kulli Muslim.

"Seeking knowledge is an obligation upon every Muslim."

(Ibn Majah)

Hadith on Avoiding Prying into others' affairs

مِنْ حُسْنِ إِسْلَامِ الْمَرْءِ تَرْكُهُ مَا لَا يَعْنِيهِ

Min husni islamil-mar’i tarkuhu ma la ya’nihi.

"Part of a person’s being a good Muslim is his leaving alone that which does not concern him."

(Al-Tirmidhi)
